Sunjay Kapur Dies at 53: A Sudden Heart Attack Silences a Business Giant
Business tycoon and industrialist Sunjay Kapur, once married to Bollywood star Karisma Kapoor, has passed away at the age of 53 due to a sudden cardiac arrest, as reported by ANI. The news has shocked both the business world and the film fraternity. Sunjay, who was deeply involved in the corporate sphere and known for his dynamic leadership, died doing something he loved—playing polo, a sport that had long been his passion.

Tragically, the fatal incident occurred during a polo match. According to sources cited by ANI, while Sunjay was actively participating in the game, a bee reportedly flew into his mouth while he was on horseback. This unexpected encounter is believed to have triggered a fatal heart attack. Although emergency medical support arrived swiftly and efforts were made to revive him, he could not be saved.

Sunjay’s personal life had often drawn public attention. His first marriage was to Nandita Mahtani, a fashion designer. Later, in 2003, he tied the knot with actress Karisma Kapoor. The couple had two children together—a daughter named Samaira and a son, Kiaan. Their separation was highly publicized, marked by a long legal battle. They began contemplating divorce in 2005, following which Karisma moved back to Mumbai in 2010. Their son Kiaan was born around the same time. In 2014, they formally filed for divorce, which was finalized in June 2016.

After his split with Karisma, Sunjay found love again with Priya Sachdev, a model and entrepreneur. Priya was previously married to Vikram Chatwal, the American hotel heir and son of hospitality tycoon Sant Singh Chatwal. With Priya, Sunjay had another child and seemed to be building a peaceful family life.

Not just a family man, Sunjay Kapur was also a powerful figure in Indian industry. As the chairman of Sona Comstar, a leading automotive components manufacturer, he had recently been appointed as the head of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for the northern region. He was set to oversee industrial policy and development initiatives across seven major Indian states—including Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, and Punjab—as well as Union Territories like Chandigarh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh.

In an eerie coincidence, Sunjay’s final post on social media was made only hours before his death. He had expressed sorrow over the tragic Air India crash that took several lives, showcasing his empathy and engagement with national events until the very end.

Taking to X, the late tycoon wrote, "Terrible news of the tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad. My thoughts and prayers are with all the families affected. May they find strength in this difficult hour."

His passing leaves a void in both his personal and professional spheres. A man of drive, influence, and complexity, Sunjay Kapur’s legacy will be remembered by family, colleagues, and those whose lives he touched.
